Gift a night

Give them a night of sleep.

A licensed nurse takes the night, and the new parents sleep. See what a night costs where they live, then print a card or send it as a link.

The short answer

A night with a licensed night nurse costs about $520 for 10 hours at the US typical rate, and more in cities like Seattle ($650) and San Francisco ($710). Night Nurse does not sell gift cards: you give the money to the parents through a registry cash fund, a check or a payment app, and they pay their nurse directly. Make the card below to tell them what it is for.

How to give it

The card says what it is for. The money goes to them.

A registry cash fund. Babylist and Zola both let parents add a cash fund. Ask them to add one called "night nurse" or "a night of sleep", give through it, and send the card with your note.

A check or a payment app. Print the card, tuck a check inside, or send the link with a transfer. Put "night nurse" in the memo so the money does not disappear into diapers.

A group gift. One night is a lot for one person and a little for six. Grandparents, siblings and coworkers can each put in a share. The calculator above shows the split.

Give it early. Experienced night nurses book 4 to 6 months ahead, so a gift at the baby shower gives the parents time to choose. See when to book a night nurse.

What a night covers

What the parents get.

A licensed night nurse, an RN or LPN, arrives around 10 pm and takes the night: feeds or brings the baby to be fed, changes, settles and keeps a log, and hands over a morning report around 6 or 7 am. The parents sleep in stretches they have not had since the birth. Hour by hour, it is in what a night nurse does.

Night Nurse never calls an unlicensed caregiver a nurse. The parents can browse nurses for free and see every rate before they pay anything.

Questions families ask

Can I buy a Night Nurse gift card?

No. Night Nurse does not sell gift cards or hold money for caregivers. Families hire and pay their nurse directly, so the gift is money you give the parents: through a registry cash fund, a check or a payment app. The card on this page tells them what it is for.

How much does one night with a night nurse cost?

Nurses set their own rates. A 10-hour night with a licensed night nurse runs about $520 at the US typical rate, $650 in Seattle and $710 in San Francisco. Twins add about 20%.

Can the parents use the gift for the placement fee?

Yes. It is their money. Most families who hire through Night Nurse pay a $250 deposit to unlock caregivers and a flat $1,500 placement fee for a licensed nurse, less the deposit, on top of what they pay their nurse. A gift can cover any of it.

When should I give it?

Before the baby arrives, if you can. Experienced night nurses book 4 to 6 months ahead, so a gift at the baby shower gives the parents time to find someone. A gift after the birth still helps; there is just less choice.

Can an FSA or HSA pay for a night nurse instead?

Usually not for a healthy baby. Care of a normal, healthy newborn generally does not count as a medical expense, which is part of why a night of sleep makes a useful gift.

The parents live in another state. Does that work?

Yes. Night Nurse introduces families to licensed night nurses anywhere in the United States. Choose where they live and the card shows what a night costs there.
