Indiana licensing

What license a nurse needs here.

Indiana is in the Nurse Licensure Compact (since July 2020). A nurse can care for your baby in Indiana with an Indiana RN or LPN license, or with a multistate license issued by another compact state. A single-state license from a state outside the compact does not cover Indiana.

Nurses here are licensed by the Indiana State Board of Nursing.

Look up any nurse's license with the Indiana State Board of Nursing or on Nursys before you hire. Every unlock of a nurse through us includes license verification.

Questions families ask

How much does a night nurse cost in Indiana?

Nurses set their own rates. Our rate guide puts licensed night nurses in Indiana at about $35 to $70 an hour, depending on the area, with Chicago at the top. Through Night Nurse you pay your nurse directly, plus one flat $1,500 placement fee for a licensed nurse.

Can a nurse with a multistate license work in Indiana?

Yes, if another compact state issued it. Indiana is in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a multistate license from a compact state covers care in Indiana. A single-state license from outside the compact does not.

Do I owe my night nurse overtime in Indiana?

Possibly. You hire your nurse directly, so your family is the employer. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, a household employee who does not live in your home, paid by the hour, is owed time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. We found no Indiana law that adds to that for household employees, so four 10-hour nights a week stays at 40 hours and a fifth is paid at time and a half. Ask a tax or legal adviser how this applies to your plan.

Does Indiana pay parents for leave after a birth?

Indiana has no state paid family leave program that pays new parents. The federal Family and Medical Leave Act gives up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to parents who qualify, so many families plan night care around when a partner goes back to work.
