Massachusetts licensing
What license a nurse needs here.
Massachusetts has passed the Nurse Licensure Compact but does not honor multistate licenses yet: the state board is aiming to start in May 2027. Until it does, a nurse caring for your baby in Massachusetts needs a Massachusetts RN or LPN license, whatever license they hold elsewhere.
Nurses here are licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Look up any nurse's license with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing or on Nursys before you hire. Every unlock of a nurse through us includes license verification.

Questions families ask
How much does a night nurse cost in Massachusetts?
Nurses set their own rates. Our rate guide puts licensed night nurses in Massachusetts at about $41 to $77 an hour, depending on the area, with Boston at the top. Through Night Nurse you pay your nurse directly, plus one flat $1,500 placement fee for a licensed nurse.
Can a nurse with a multistate license work in Massachusetts?
Not yet. Massachusetts has passed the compact but does not honor multistate licenses yet, so for now a nurse needs a Massachusetts license.
Do I owe my night nurse overtime in Massachusetts?
Possibly. You hire your nurse directly, so your family is the employer. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, a household employee who does not live in your home, paid by the hour, is owed time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. State law adds more (Massachusetts Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, 2014). Domestic workers are owed time and a half after 40 hours in a week, and anyone working 16 or more hours a week must get a written agreement. Ask a tax or legal adviser how this applies to your plan.
Does Massachusetts pay parents for leave after a birth?
Yes. Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave has paid benefits since 2021 and covers up to 12 weeks of leave to bond with a new baby, for parents who qualify. It does not pay for a night nurse, but it shapes how many nights most families book.
